CAS International
CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) is the biggest organization in the world which works exclusively on the abolition of bullfighting and cruel fiestas (festivals) during which bulls and other animals are tortured. Together with our colleague organizations, we want to end this animal abuse as soon as possible.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

Achievements - continuation
- In the bullfighting countries, the media and others pay much more positive attention to the anti bullfighting movement than before. The media were not interested in us – also because several media were linked with the bullfighting industry – but now, more and more media start criticizing bullfighting and cruel fiestas.
- More and more reports are coming in stating that the bullfighting industry is losing huge amounts of money. Without the subsidies from local, regional and national governments, as well as money from the European Union and companies, the bullfighting industry could not keep its head above water, since the interest in bullfighting is declining.
- The anti-bullfighting movement is becoming more international every year, being more able to share knowledge and resources. In the last few years there have been several International Congresses on the subject (such as in Barcelona), and the World’s Network for the Abolition of Bullfighting has been created, which has already organised three Intercontinental Summits: one in Lisbon (Portugal), one in Brussels (Belgium) and another in Caracas (Venezuela).

- For the first time veterinarians from all over the world have begun to organise themselves against bullfighting with the creation of AVAT, the Association of Veterinarians for the Abolition of Bullfighting.
- The number of broadcasts of bullfighting on TV has declined over the years. For example, TVE, the Spanish national TV channel, has stopped broadcasting bullfighting (for lack of audience), and in Ecuador authorities have banned the broadcast of bullfights during hours when children are watching television (to protect children from violent images).
- In several countries, regions and municipalities new laws, regulations and legal rulings that make the 'work' of the bullfighting industry more difficult have been adopted, such as: a ban on the attendance of minors to bullfights in the Basque Country (Spain) and in Guayaquil (Ecuador), a ruling in Peru that bullfighting cannot be exempted from paying taxes because of the claim that it is a cultural event and a ban on the public killing of bulls in Cuenca (Ecuador).
- The anti bullfighting movement is growing everywhere, both in quality and in quantity. In recent years, there have been many protest demonstrations that were 'the first ever' in municipalities such as Málaga, Sevilla and Valladolid (Spain) and Bayonne (France). All these cities are in the 'heart' of the bullfighting territory. The movement not only 'protests' as it used to do, but now organises art competitions, concerts, conferences, publicity stunts, publications, documentaries, etc.

- More and more countries worldwide are implementing animal protection legislation that explicitly prohibits fights with animals like in bullfighting, not only setting an example but also preventing a potential future access to these countries for the bullfighting industry. Countries such as the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland and Belgium have implemented such laws.
- Trying to stop public subsidies to bullfighting is becoming a new campaign tool for the anti-bullfighting movement. It is already producing some results, such as in Dos Hermanas (Andalucía, Spain), where in 2008 local subsidies to bullfighting where stopped by the town Council. In doing so, they also stopped all bullfights, since they were organized in mobile bullrings. These bullrings are no longer affordable without subsidies.
- Even in the bullfighting industry, people are becoming aware that bullfighting does not have a future.
This is a mere selection of the successes the anti bullfighting movement accomplished in her struggle against bullfighting and other forms of animal abuse. We keep on campaign to end these cruelties as soon as possible.

CAS International has made a list of tips for tourists, so you can also help us abolish bullfighting and other cruel events with bulls and other animals as a tourist.
The main tip: never go to a bullfight or a cruel fiesta, like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!
