CAS International
CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) is the biggest organization in the world which works exclusively on the abolition of bullfighting and cruel fiestas (festivals) during which bulls and other animals are tortured. Together with our colleague organizations, we want to end this animal abuse as soon as possible.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

6. After all these years of campaigning, are there any results?
Many results have been achieved through the years and the number of successes keeps rising. For example, in big cities such as Madrid or Barcelona there is now only one bullring left, and in the Spanish regions of Catalonia, Asturias and Galicia each only have two bullrings left. More and more municipalities in the bullfighting countries declare themselves officially 'anti-bullfighting municipality', other cities and towns reduce or stop their subsidies to bullfighting, the political and public pressure on bullfighting increases, the bullfighting industry loses more and more money because of the withdrawal of sponsors, etc.

7. Do you also campaign against 'festivals' with animals, such as the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona?
Our goal is 'to end bullfighting and other cultural events that lead to the suffering of animals'. This also includes fiestas ('festivals') with animals. In all bullfighting countries (and also in other countries), tens of thousands of events take place during which bulls, cows and other animals are tortured and/or killed. In Spain alone, tens of thousands of bulls a year are set on fire, drowned, dragged through the streets on ropes and abused in several other ways (please take a look here for descriptions of cruel fiestas).
CAS International works together with colleague organizations to stop these forms of torture as well. We are co-organizer of demonstrations in Tordesillas and other cities and towns where fiestas take place, we support colleague organizations who denounce fiestas, lobby several authorities to stop these atrocities, etc.
8. Bulls aren't killed during Portuguese bullfights, are they?
In Portugal, bulls are not killed in the bullring, under the eyes of the public. However, during the bullfight they are tortured in several ways. After the bullfight, they are herded out of the bullring and are killed outside the public's view, after waiting in a dark cage for hours or even days for the slaughter man to put them out of their misery. With lies such as 'the bull is not killed' and 'bloodless bullfight', the Portuguese bullfighting industry lures tourists into the bullrings, so that they can earn more money and organize more bullfights.

9. Is it true that horses are also victims of bullfighting?
Horses are used in different forms of bullfights. During classic Spanish-style bullfights, they carry the picador (the man who cuts the neck muscles of the bull with a long lance). Because the bull does not realise that the aggressor is not the horse, but the picador, horses are regularly tossed by the bulls and can – despite the protective armour around their bodies – be severely gored.
For rejoneos and Portuguese bullfights, the horses are trained to dodge the bulls, but they can also get wounded during this type of bullfights. The animals are in any case subjected to fear and stress.
Every year, about 200 horses die in the bullrings. It is unknown how many horses die outside the bullrings as a result of bullfighting. Here you can read more about the different forms of bullfighting and the role horses play in these bullfights.

10. Are these cruelties ever going to end?
We are convinced that bullfighting does not have a future. By continuing to lobby politicians, informing travel organizations and tourists about the cruelty of bullfighting and by conducting other peaceful campaigns, the anti bullfighting movement has managed to achieve many good achievements.
In all bullfighting countries more and more politicians, media and people of the general public declare themselves openly against bullfighting and the bullfighting industry is driven into a corner. Municipalities in the bullfighting countries are not afraid anymore to declare themselves 'anti-bullfighting' and even bullfighting aficionados express their concern that bullfighting will soon disappear.
