CAS International
CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) is the biggest organization in the world which works exclusively on the abolition of bullfighting and cruel fiestas (festivals) during which bulls and other animals are tortured. Together with our colleague organizations, we want to end this animal abuse as soon as possible.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

Capeas
The term capea embraces all those ‘amateur’ bullfighting activities which only involve provoking bulls or cows with capotes (magenta capes), and not stabbing or killing them in any way.
They can take many forms and be quite informal, and they happen as often with cows as with bulls, although they normally involve novillos or becerros (animals younger than the bulls used in 'proper' bullfights). They should not be confused with training activities that take place on bullfighting schools (which take place behind closed doors), since capeas are public events where often wannabe-bullfighters try their 'bravery and skills' in front of the public, perhaps hoping that apoderados (bullfighting agents) ‘discover’ them.

Capeas are often organised during town fiestas as a ‘light’ form of bullfighting for the younger generation, but contrary to the typical use of bulls during fiestas (which are chaotic activities aimed to maximum public participation), the emphasis of the capeas lies on the person and his/her skill with the bull, rather than public mocking of the bulls. During these capeas in fiestas, normally everyone with a capote can volunteer to participate. It is not uncommon to see ‘private’ capeas as part of weddings or private parties, where the attendants - sometimes already drunk - are asked to show their skills with the cape and young cattle, as part of the party’s fun.
Despite the fact that the bulls or cows are not injured on purpose during these activities, there is no doubt that they suffer from stress and exhaustion due to the continuous teasing and provocation.
Tips for tourists
CAS International has made a list of tips for tourists, so you can also help us abolish bullfighting and other cruel events with bulls and other animals as a tourist.
The main tip: never go to a bullfight or a cruel fiesta, like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!
