CAS International
CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) is the biggest organization in the world which works exclusively on the abolition of bullfighting and cruel fiestas (festivals) during which bulls and other animals are tortured. Together with our colleague organizations, we want to end this animal abuse as soon as possible.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

Courses Camarguaises
Courses Camarguaises take place in the south east of France (the Camargue region).
This type of bullfight takes place in a bullring (sometimes a portable bullring), often the same bullring that is used for Spanish style bullfights. The participants in a Course Camarguaise are called raseteurs.
For about 15-20 minutes, the raseteurs compete with each other by cutting threads off the bulls' horns (several threads are tied between the base of the bull’s horns prior to the bullfight) with metal hooks (rasets) they carry in their hands. They earn points if they manage to cut the threads. Often, they jump over the wooden fence to escape the charging bull. Afterwards, the bulls are herded back into their pen.

They use a different breed of 'bullfighting bull' to the one normally seen in a Spanish-style bullfighting (smaller in size and with longer, higher horns) and they are bred in the area. Such bulls are 'reused' many times and become known among the aficionados (in fact, the trophies the raseteurs can win tend to have the names of famous bulls). The role of the bull breeders (breeders of so called manades) in 'producing heroic bulls' is important, so the breeders are competing as much as the raseteurs.

Every year, about 800 Courses Camarguaises take place in municipalities around Nîmes and Arles, such as Saintes Maries de la Mer, Saint Laurent d'Aigouze, Tarascon, Vauvert, etc.. In Arles, an event called Cocarde d'Or takes place in July, where bulls are chased to the bullring by men on horse and on foot, after which a Course Camarguaise takes place. In this bullring, Spanish type bullfights are also organized. Many Spanish immigrants live in the Camargue and Courses Camarguaises are also visited by many foreign tourists.
CAS International takes a clear stand against Courses Camarguaises. During these events, bulls constantly suffer from stress, exhaustion and sometimes pain. Bulls can get wounded by the raset and the iron tridents that are used to make the bulls move when they do not want to (such as when they jump up the fence and they do not want to return to the arena) are designed to produce pain.

Some bulls try to jump over the wooden fence and may get hurt on their stomachs and other body parts. We have also seen bulls being injured by other bulls during the confusion caused by the people around them when they try to take them out of the bullring. Courses Camarguaises are also often combined with other forms of cruel 'entertainment', like bull runs.

Tips for tourists
CAS International has made a list of tips for tourists, so you can also help us abolish bullfighting and other cruel events with bulls and other animals as a tourist.
The main tip: never go to a bullfight or a cruel fiesta, like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!
