CAS International
CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) is the biggest organization in the world which works exclusively on the abolition of bullfighting and cruel fiestas (festivals) during which bulls and other animals are tortured. Together with our colleague organizations, we want to end this animal abuse as soon as possible.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

Courses Landaises
Courses Landaises take place in the southwest of France (Landes region). During this type of 'bullfights', cows are used instead of bulls, but they are from a 'bullfighting breed'.
A Course Landaise is a competition between teams named cuadrillas, linked to particular breeding estates. A cuadrilla is made up of a teneur de corde, two entraîneurs and several sauteurs and écarteurs. The cows are brought to the bullring in boxes and then taken out one after another. Their horns have been made blunt and are tied up with a band and a long rope during the entire event. This is how a Course Landaise goes:
The teneur de corde controls the end of the dangling rope attached to the cow's horns and the two entraîneurs help to pull the cow with the rope towards him. The teneur de corde - who stands behind a wooden panel to protect him - 'teases' the cow by pulling the rope repetitively or by poking her with a stick that may have a metal point at the end.
When the cow shows clear signs of wanting to run away from him, he releases the rope and then she runs away towards the exit of the arena. On her way there, she will encounter either an écarteur or a sauteur, depending of the occasion. The écarteurs will try to dodge the cow in her way to the exit, holding their ground until the last possible moment, and the sauteurs will leap over her.

They wear shoes with spikes to avoid slipping. When the cow reaches the exit - which is of course closed - she is pulled towards the teneur de corde again, and the whole ritual is repeated. The cows are not killed and might be used for Courses Landaises for years.
Every year, about 500 Courses Landaises are organized in the southwest of France, in municipalities such as Dax (the 'capital' of the Course Landaise), Capbreton, Mont de Marsan, Nogaro and Aire sur l’Adour.
CAS International takes a clear stand against Courses Landaises. During these events, cows suffer from stress, exhaustion and pain. The pain comes from the occasions where sharp sticks are used to make the cows run and from the strong pulling of the rope when the cow does not want to get close to the teneur de corde again (whom of course she remembers well from the last time she faced him).

Courses Landaises are also regularly combined with other forms of cruel 'entertainment' where cows and bulls are teased by children, such as Toro Piscine ('bull in the pool'). This happens for example in Capbreton.

Tips for tourists
CAS International has made a list of tips for tourists, so you can also help us abolish bullfighting and other cruel events with bulls and other animals as a tourist.
The main tip: never go to a bullfight or a cruel fiesta, like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!
