CAS International
CAS International (Comité Anti Stierenvechten) is the biggest organization in the world which works exclusively on the abolition of bullfighting and cruel fiestas (festivals) during which bulls and other animals are tortured. Together with our colleague organizations, we want to end this animal abuse as soon as possible.

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

Myths
ATTENTION! Some people are persuaded by local inhabitants of the bullfighting countries to attend a bullfight. These people sometimes tell you that it is a 'training match' or that the bull is not going to be killed. Once in the bullring, it turns out that the bull is indeed killed, just like during 'regular' bullfights. So do not buy these stories!
- People say that a red cloth makes bulls angry and makes them attack the matador, but this is a myth since bulls do not react to the colour red. They respond to the movement of the cape, because they feel threatened and want to defend themselves against their aggressors. For that matter, the capote, which is used by bullfighters and is magenta in the front and yellow in the back, and the muleta, which is red all over and used by the matador, could in fact be of any other dark colour (for more information, please go to the description of a corrida de toros).
- 'Bullfighting bulls' are said to be aggressive beasts, who are too dangerous to approach. However, this is an exaggeration because - especially when they are with their herd - they tend to flee from unknown humans rather than attacking them. When they arrive in the arena of the bullring, they are alone in a strange place and they have been constantly provoked, and this is why they charge as a defensive method against their aggressors.

- Some people think it is strange that the bull keeps running towards his aggressors, and not running away from them. However, the bull would indeed run away if he had the chance, such as during Running of the Bulls (such as in Pamplona). He is not able to do not so in the arena, because the bullring and the bullfights themselves are in fact designed to remove any thought of escaping or protecting himself from the mind of the bull: the bullring is circular to prevent the bull from using corners to protect his back; the exit of the arena is camouflaged, so the bull does not see it anymore; they provoke the bull to make him run until he is exhausted and does not have any energy to attempt to escape; and finally the injuries caused by the pica and the banderillas inform the bull that he is in a really dangerous situation and his only and last resource to defend himself is to charge towards any big moving object (i.e. the cape of a bullfighter, or a horse). Nevertheless, you still see bulls standing against the wall looking for protection (especially when they are already agonized) or even attempting to jump over the fence, confirming that all their behaviour is in fact defensive and not aggressive.

- A bull is not a dumb animal, but he is completely confused when they put him in the bullring for the first time. The bull is normally killed at the end of his first bullfight, because otherwise he could become too aware of the 'deception' and therefore too dangerous for any bullfighter from then on. Bulls eventually learn after one bullfight that there is a person behind the cape of the bullfighter, and it is that person who they have to charge to defend themselves. Due to the relatively poor vision bulls have, the matador uses the cape to hide from the bull.
- Some people say that people from non-bullfighting countries should stay out of the bullfighting debate, because it is the culture of the Spanish, French, Portuguese and Latin American people, and 'others' do not understand this. This is not true, since animals do not have nationalities and everyone can understand their suffering. Besides, CAS International was in fact founded on request of the Spanish Society for the Protection of Animals (ADDA). According to many polls, more people in the bullfighting countries are against bullfighting than in favour, and they all need help from other countries to get rid of bullfighting. They struggle to fight against such a barbaric activity which is supported by a powerful political and economic elite. So it is the people in the bullfighting countries who are asking everyone else to help them to get rid of bullfighting.
- People say that bullfighting should be defended because it is 'cultural heritage', but that cannot be a reason, since everything humanity has ever rightly abolished (human sacrifices, slavery, etc) was also a culture heritage at some point. 'Civilisation' is the process of eliminating obsolete traditions and incorporating new practices according to modern social, political and scientific values, and certainly today’s universal values about animal protection make bullfighting completely obsolete everywhere in the world.
- People say that 'bullfighting bulls' are a different race of bulls (or even a different species!), which are born to be killed in bullfights. In fact, 'bullfighting bulls' cannot be considered a species at all, and many scientists claim that they cannot even be considered as a different race. They are just a type of European domesticated bull that has been artificially selected to have more tendency to defend himself by charging than by running, a characteristic that has not really established itself well genetically in a new 'race' and because of this, not all bulls bred for bullfighting are selected for bullfights (only a small part of the 'bullfighting bulls' bred end up in a bullfight; the rest is used during fiestas or goes to the slaughterhouse). For all intent and purposes they are 'genetic aberrations' created by humans to make animals a bit more dangerous that they would naturally be, which in itself is a practice banned in many countries.
- There have been recent claims that bulls are a different type of mammal that suffers no pain when stabbed or killed. This is ridiculous, of course, and most scientists have completely discredited the 'studies' that the vets from the bullfighting industry have produced to support such claims. In fact, if one has to believe the results, 'studies' that are said to have 'discovered' surprising levels of the hormones cortisol and beta-endorphins in 'bullfighting bulls', they can be interpreted as the opposite: 'bullfighting bulls' suffer far more than one expected before.
- The bullfighting industry has claimed recently that bullfighting is good for the environment, since the dehesas - the areas where bulls are bred - are protected because of this activity. This is not true, since many of these areas would be equally protected if bulls were not bred there, and the bull does not play any significant role in natural ecosystems, since it is neither predator nor prey of natural species.
Tips for tourists
CAS International has made a list of tips for tourists, so you can also help us abolish bullfighting and other cruel events with bulls and other animals as a tourist.
The main tip: never go to a bullfight or a cruel fiesta, like the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona!
Please take a look here for more tips.
