CAS International

Bullfighting
Bullfighting is one of the most cruel forms of animal abuse. Every year, more than 250,000 bulls and cows are tortured and killed worldwide during bullfights and similar events.
Also during fiestas ('village festivals'), tens of thousands of bulls and other animals are severely maltreated.

- In March the platform ‘Sin Violencia’ (without violence) has been founded with the objective of banning bullfighting in Mexico City. 124 organizations are affiliated to this platform, including CAS International. It is likely that bullfighting will be banned soon in Mexico City: a commission has recently indicated that it supports a ban on bullfighting.
- On March 15, the Parliament of Panama decided that bullfighting, both the Spanish and Portuguese styles, will be prohibited. Although no bullfights are being organized in Panama, the prohibition makes sure that the bullfighting industry will not be able to establish itself in this country. Now that the losses within the bullfighting countries are increasing the bullfighting industry attempts to export bullfighting to other countries. Fortunately, in Panama this will not be possible anymore. Click here for more.
- In Aragua (Venezuela), the council decided to prohibit children's access to bullfighting because it is harmful to the mental health of children.
- Bullfighting has been banned in the Spanish state of Catalonia, but the correbous (bullruns) continue. The Catalan Parliament has no current plans to prohibit this cruel tradition. However, an opinion poll recently revealed that 68% of Catalans believe that the 'correbous' should be banned.
