On Friday 22 of April, ex-matador André Viard announced by means of a press release that bullfighting has been placed on the French list of Cultural Heritage. This decision was made by a committee of the Ministry of Culture and has not been treated by the Parliament.

France is the only country in the world that has taken such a step. The danger exists that UNESCO, following the French decision, will place bullfighting on the list of Immaterial Cultural Heritage. According to several pro-bullfighting organisations, the French bullfighting lobby will send an application for this to UNESCO.

Yours truly requests Frédéric Mitterrand, Minister of Culture and Communication, bullfighting to be withdrawn from the list of French immaterial cultural heritage as soon as possible. Given the fact that this application has been realized in an improperly obscure way and that this topic is polemic in nature, we make the request to start a country-wide debate on bullfighting. This debate could be commenced in the National Assembly with the proposition to completely prohibit bullfighting, made by the delegates Muriel Marland-Militello (UMP) and Geneviève Gaillard (PS) in July 2010.
