Adopt Menta

In December 2020, the Madrid-based animal rescue organization Amores Peludos received a phone call from a hunter. One of his galgos (Spanish greyhounds) was not eating and was in very poor condition. Two volunteers immediately went to investigate and were confronted with a heartbreaking situation.

Severely emaciated

Menta was severely emaciated. She could barely stand or walk. While the volunteers were trying to assess her condition, the hunter literally kicked her outside. The volunteers begged him to leave her alone and immediately took her to a veterinarian.

There, the true extent of her condition became clear. Her stomach and esophagus were filled with stones and small bones. She weighed only 16 kilograms (35 lbs). Her anus was severely damaged, possibly as a result of abuse, a bite, or another serious trauma. Her body was completely exhausted.

A new name

That same day, she was given her new name, Menta, named after the mint plant.

The volunteers then did everything they could to provide her with a safe place to recover. During the Christmas season, Menta stayed with a loving foster family, her bed placed beneath the Christmas tree. For the first time in her life, she experienced warmth, comfort, and security.

However, it soon became clear that her injuries were profound. Menta could not wag her tail, struggled to stand up, and continued to lose weight despite receiving proper nutrition, eventually dropping to just 12 kilograms (26 lbs). She was unable to relieve herself independently, and volunteers had to assist her every day. At times she could not walk and would urinate in her bed.

Neurological damage

After extensive examinations, it was determined that Menta suffers from severe neurological damage caused by extreme physical abuse. She has no sensation in one of her hind legs or around her anus. Since then, she has required intensive care and rehabilitation.

Today, Menta is doing well. She has gained weight and is surrounded by people who love her. She will never be offered for adoption, but Lara, the founder of Amores Peludos, has promised to care for her for the rest of her life. Menta has finally found her forever home.

Spanish galgos

Menta represents the thousands of Spanish galgos who suffer the same fate every year. Her story is not an exception but a painful reality. Many dogs are so severely abused by the time they are rescued that veterinarians can no longer save them.

By adopting Menta from a distance, you help cover her medical care, food, shelter, and rehabilitation. At the same time, you support our work to end hunting with dogs. Please read the adoption procedure to adopt Menta and help give her the care she deserves.
