Hunting dogs
In Spain, at least 50,000 galgos, podencos, and other hunting dogs are abandoned each year. There are no official figures, but the actual numbers are likely much higher. Many dogs do not survive. The mass abandonment of hunting dogs occurs annually at the end of the hunting season. For the galgo (Spanish greyhound), this is in February, which is why this month is known as the dreaded month for the galgo. The hunting season for podencos ends in October, depending on the autonomous region.
